True Change Today

Instant Happiness

Lately, I’ve noticed a man sitting in his rocking chair and being on the phone. Day after day after day.

Today, as I was returning home from the gym, I locked my eyes with his and smiled. With a genuine, “I don’t need or want anything from you” smile. I got a smile in return. It was a beautiful moment and an amazing start of my day.

At that moment I realized something, we should all smile more often. This simple act can make us all happier. And don’t just smile at your friends or family or pets. Smile at a stranger. Like me today.

Actually, I can’t think of a good reason not to smile at everyone as the opportunity presents itself.

Try this: next time you go out of your house and see an unfamiliar face, look the person in the eye, and give them a genuine smile. Waiting in the line? Smile at the person next to you. Buying groceries? Smile at a cashier. Seeing a road worker, a salesman, or a frustrated mom trying to comfort an unhappy child? Smile.

In most cases, you’ll get a smile in return, and maybe you would make someone’s day a little bit better. And if you don’t, it doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t warm their heart, so don’t take it personally.

When someone does not reciprocate by acknowledging your smile, keep in mind you never know what is going on in their life at that moment. That person could be having a rough day due to things unimaginable to you and your smile could be the only sunshine in their day.

The more we smile, the more smiles we’ll get in return. Such a simple, yet so beautiful and powerful way to make the world a happier place.

Life is like a mirror. Smile at it and it smiles back at you.
